OpenAI is partnering with Hearst, a journalistic and media company.
Is this good news?
It's clear that OpenAI is trying to create a diverse AI model that can serve as a personal assistant that anyone can benefit from.
If OpenAI continues to partner with as many news organisations as possible, this could be a good thing for the diversity in the database their ChatGPT operates on.
We would have internet's large data pool with journalistic material on events happening.
However, the partnerships will likely be hand-picked, which is very bad news because this kind of approach will create biased responses from ChatGPT and OpenAI's future models and we would be trapped in an echo chamber which would open the doors to even greater news control and propaganda activism.
Needless to say, I'm not happy with the path OpenAI is taking even with the promise that ChatGPT will provide links for its sources as this does NOT remove the problem of narrow selection of news outlets.
Even if they try to form many partnerships, the truth is that the small media organisations tend to be the most truthful and the partnerships would likely be formed with bigger outlets.
Conclusion
The initial goal and the promise of ChatGPT's objectivism might be thrown out the window after all...
Assistant is as useful as our ability to communicate to them our needs.
I hope OpenAI executes this path well...
